Preston Peltier takes fifth season victory

CONCORD, N.C. –  Preston Peltier claimed his fifth victory in five entries Saturday night in the Hutch/BSR Pro Late Model feature during Tim Marburger Honda Stanly County night presented by The Stanly News & Press at Concord Speedway.  Other division winners included Joey Rinehardt of Charlotte in the Town & Country Ford Late Models, Bryan Thomas of Monroe in the Coca-Cola Pure Stocks, Barry “Hollywood” Canter’s first ever victory in the Tim Marburger Honda fast & Furious Fours and Jim Fluharty of Concord in the Wilburn Auto Body Thunder Cars in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series event.

Peltier had set fastest lap in qualifying at 112.528 miles per hour but the top seven draw placed him in fifth position for the start.  Matt Brooks of Concord led the first lap from his outside front row starting position but Peltier quickly worked his way through the front four to take the lead on lap seven, never to look back except to see some exciting side by side action in his mirror.  At the end of the sixty lap contest Bobby Measmer, Jr. had worked his way to second in the Racing Electronics Chevrolet, Cooper Faassen in the Wilburn Auto Body Chevrolet claimed third, points-leader Daniel Johnson fourth in the Checks Cashed Chevrolet and Matt Brooks fifth in the #79 Pirtek Impala SS

Joey Rinehardt of Charlotte claimed his second-ever win at Concord by simply out-running the rest of the Town & Country Ford Late Model field.  It wasn’t an easy feat as Jerry Miracle of Monroe in the Miracle Dental Center Chevrolet and Mike Eplee from Rutherfordton in the Main Metal Recycling - Nally Racing Chevrolet challenged the entire second half of the feature.  The finish was in that order with Kenny Brooks of Concord fourth and Bobby Measmer, Jr. of Concord rounding out the top five.

Bryan Thomas of Monroe lead lap one of the Coca-Cola Pure Stock division from his third-place starting position.  Jeff Melton soon flexed the muscle of his NASCAL Thunderbird to take the lead on lap two.  On the eleventh circuit Melton’s mount began falling of the torrid pace while Thomas on lap twelve to run out with the win behind the wheel of the Camden Bowl / Donnie Johnson Hardwood Floors  Monte Carlo.  Second finisher was Randy McAnulty in the Carolina Pipe Cleaning / Leisure Tyme Rentals Chevy.  Third went to Steve Irvin of Concord driving the #36 Monte Carlo.  Fourth and fifth were rounded out by Charles Hutto of Monroe and David Earnhardt, Jr. of Rockwell.

Only four cars entered the Wilburn Auto Body Thunder Cars feature, but it had to be the tightest, probably most exciting race of the evening with the top three competitors covered by an eye-blink for the biggest part of the thirty lap run.  Jim Fluharty of Concord claimed his second victory of the season in the Dave Sondles Builders / Ski Enterprises Thunder Car, Adam Welch wound up sliding off Turn Three on the run to the checkered flag to finish second after literally being on Fluharty’s rear bumper the last two laps, Hunter Bledsoe claimed third while Rick Fleming of Mocksville suffered a broken drive shaft on lap fifteen, but still claimed fourth

The special fifty lap opening event for the Tim Marburger Honda Fast & Furious Fours went to Barry Canter of Charlotte in his first-ever Concord Speedway win.  Second went to Tracy Mullis of Indian trail, third to Jake Simpson of Albemarle, fourth was Matt Grimes of Kannapolis and fifth Steve Grimes, also of Kannapolis.

Racing goes into high gear in the coming weeks at Concord Speedway.  Next Saturday, August 8th is Town & Country Ford Kid’s Night.  The event is highlighted by children age 11 and under riding parade laps in the race cars at 7:30 PM.  More activities for the children include train rides, moonwalk and more, all free for children age 11 and under accompanied by an adult.  The racing card includes features of twenty laps for the Fast & Furious Fours, sixty laps for the Pure Stocks, forty laps for the Late Models, thirty laps for the Thunder Cars and sixty laps for the Pro Late Models

Legends and Bandoleros racing returns to the quarter-mile oval on Friday August 14th and Sunday August 16th as a rain date for May 17th.

Saturday August 15th is Whelen Night at the races for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series.  Mobil 1 has jumped on board with Concord Speedway to present a $5,000 to win, one hundred all-green-flag laps contest for the Hutch/BSR Pro Late Models plus traditional races for all other divisions.  You’ll want to be here for this one!
