Bobby Measmer, Jr. scores fourth season victory at Concord

CONCORD, N.C. – Bobby Measmer, Jr. of Concord, driving the #14 Racing Electronics Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS claimed his fourth Hutch/BSR Pro Late model win of the 2009 season Saturday night at Concord Speedway.  Other winners in the Wilburn Auto Body Union County night at the races for the Whelen All-American Series included Steve Ackerly of Medford, New York in the Town and Country Ford Late Models, Jeff Melton in the Coca-Cola Pure Stocks, Adam Welch in the Wilburn Auto Body INEX Thunder Cars and Eric Harrington in the Tim Marburger Honda Fast and Furious Fours.

Cooper Faassen of Monroe claimed the fastest qualifying award in afternoon time trials, but, in the draw, Concord’s Bobby Gill drew the pole position and the much anticipated return of the veteran Gill showed much promise.  Mark Reedy jumped to the lead on the green flag and held on until Gill assumed the point on lap nine.  Gill continued up front until the restart after a caution for debris on the track.  Reedy took up the point again on the double file restart.  Bobby Gill and Cooper tried for the same piece of real estate in Turn One with both cars suffering damage and Gill retiring the #51 Buffalo Wild Wings of Concord entry after the contact.  Faassen continued on sans the nose of the #11.  Reedy led again through lap 53 when Measmer took the lead with an inside move to the line.  Mark reedy claimed second in the #12 MAL Entertainment Ford Fusion with third going to points leader Daniel Johnson in the #7 Checks Cashed Chevrolet.

Larry Huneycutt led the opening two laps of the Town & Country Ford Late Model contest, but, Thomasville’s Jay Payne claimed first place on lap three and held the point through lap twenty-four when Jerry Miracle took the top spot in his #32 Chevy.  Ackerly chased patiently and claimed the lead just two laps from the finish to cross the line with the victory.  Miracle finished in second position but was bumped out in post-race inspection for an air filter that didn’t meet the letter of the paper element rule.  Second was awarded to Late Model veteran terry Hoggard of Concord and third went to Jay Payne.

Jeff Melton set another track record in qualifying Saturday afternoon in his #6 NASCAL Ford Thunderbird.  Melton clocked in 19.204 seconds, shaving almost a tenth off the old record effort.  Randy McAnulty jumped to the lead at the green, Monroe’s Bryan Thomas led laps five and six and Melton went into first on lap seven.  Melton would lead through the finish on lap thirty after he and Thomas swapped first place many times, but “Dude” Thomas only officially scored first on lap twenty-six at the line.  Melton first, Thomas second and McAnulty third after the caution-free event.

Adam Welch and Hunter Bledsoe swapped first place time and again through the entire thirty-lap Wilburn Auto Body Thunder Car feature, however, in the final analysis, Welch chalked up his twelfth conquest of 2009.  Bledsoe a close second and three-time winner Jim Fluharty claimed third.

In the Tim Marburger Honda fast & Furious Fours special fifty-lap evening opener Eric Harrington picked up his fourth trophy of the season in the “Carolina Panthers” Honda.  Brian “Soldier Boy” Irby crossed the line second and Eric’s brother Wayne in the “Superman” Honda finished third.

Events coming this week to Concord Speedway include an open practice Friday night on the half-mile.  Pit gates open at 5:30 PM with rotating practice from 6:30 until 9:00 PM.

Friday evening on the quarter-mile, Legends and Bandoleros take to the track again.  Pit gates open at 5:30 PM with heat races rolling off at 7:45 and features follow the heat races.  One of the best entertainment values anywhere is available for just $7.00 for adults with children age 11 and under admitted free with a ticketed adult.

Saturday on the half-mile The Whelen All-American Series features one hundred laps for the Pro Late Models; forty laps for the Late Models; thirty laps for the Pure Stocks and twenty laps for the Fast & Furious Fours.  Racing is scheduled for 7:30 PM.  Grandstand general admission is $12.00 for adults, children ages 11 and under free with a ticketed adult.
