ROGER LEE NEWTON ADDS HIS NAME TO CONCORD WINNERS LIST
CONCORD, N.C. -- (July 24, 2005) - Roger Lee Newton of Concord became
the seventh different winner this season in the NASCAR Coca Cola late model
stock division at Concord Motorsport Park. He won the 100-lap feature Saturday
night.
Other winners were: Wayne Callahan of Monroe in the 35-lap Tommy
Johnson's Motorsports Warehouse limited late model feature; Kenny Brooks of Concord in
the 25-lap Golden Gait Trailers mini stock feature; Chad Allmon of Mt.
Pleasant in the 20-lap Speedway Plumbing pure stock feature; and Ben Smith of
Harrisburg in the 15-lap Speedway Plumbing hornets feature.
Charlotte's Bo Foust jumped from the pole position to the lead and set a
blistering pace for the first third of the late model stock contest. On lap
33, his quest for a third consecutive win went away when he lost power and had
to pit for repairs.
That gave the top spot to rookie John Freeman who soon was feeling the
pressure from Newton, who started fifth. Finally, on lap 92 Newton moved inside
Freeman entering turn three with the cars banging off each other. Freeman's
car spun but he resumed quickly only dropping to fourth spot.
From there Newton rolled to the win, his 20th career win at the track and
first of the season. Ben Hinson of Kannapolis returned to racing and finished
second. Freeman ended up third with Andrew Thomas of Monroe and Justin Hill
of Concord completing the top five.
Kenneth Cook of Concord started second in the limited late model feature
and battled with Jeff Melton of Monroe for the early lead. After some contact
Melton's car spun leaving Cook to fend off a challenge from Denver's Brian
Pedrick.
During a mid-race caution Cook pitted for mechanical problems handing the
lead to Pedrick. Late in the race Callahan started to apply pressure and on
the final lap maneuvered inside Pedrick entering turn three. Similarly to the
late model action, the cars touch with Pedrick spinning and Callahan scoring
his first win of the year.
Melton rallied back to a second-place finish with Terry Hoggard of
Concord third. Randy McAnulty of Concord finished fourth and point leader Jimmy
Voyles of China Grove finished fifth.
Brooks started second in the mini stock feature and went on to score his
seventh win in the 14 races this season. David Pennell of China Grove finished
second with Roy Maness of Star third. Doug Lamp of Troutman and Linda
Cunningham of Concord rounded out the top five.
Allmon raced from the fourth-starting spot to his second win of the year
in the pure stock feature. Fellow Mt. Pleasant driver Brian Love was second
while Concord's Steve Irvin finished third. Bobby Measmer Jr. of Concord was
fourth and Steve Ackerly of Monroe fifth.
Smith started on the pole and led flag-to-flag scoring his career first
Concord Motorsport Park victory. Eric Kimrey of Albemarle finished second with
Jeremy Funk of Allentown, Pa. third.
The Saturday night is round five of the Future Cellular Big-10 Series for
super late models with a strong field of cars expected for the 125-lap run.
Late model stocks, limited late models, mini stocks and pure stock are also on
the card.
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. with qualifying at 5:45. Racing begins at 7:30.
