Roger Lee Newton claims the Pro Late Model win for USG Drivers’ Appreciation Night presented by The Cabarrus Convention and Visitors Bureau at Concord Speedway.
CONCORD, N.C. – Roger Lee Newtown claimed the Hutch BSR Pro Late Model trophy Saturday night at Concord Speedway.Other winners include Bobby Measmer, Jr. in the Town & Country Ford Late Model Division, Adam Welch in the Wilburn Auto Body INEX Thunder Cars Division, Jeff Melton in the Coca-Cola Pure Stocks Division and Ben Smith in the Tim Marburger Honda Fast & Furious Fours Division.
Roger Lee Newton dominated the Hutch/BSR Pro Late Model Division race, leading all sixty laps of the race and setting a blistering pace for the other drivers to follow. The only caution of night waved on Lap Six when Cooper Faassen spun on the track, but was able to keep it off of the wall. Mark Reedy’s night ended early on lap forty-one when he had to pull his car into the pits due to overheating. Newton celebrated in victory lane as Daniel Johnson finished second and Jimmy Weller finished third.
The first caution of the Town & Country Ford Late Models Division race waived just before the completion of the second lap when Larry Huneycutt’s car touched the apron and spun in Turn Three. The #27 brought out the second caution when he came to a rest in Turn Two. Race leader Brandon Cooper’s transmission was stuck in second gear on the restart, causing him to get a bump from the #14 of Bobby Measmer, Jr., sending the #14 to the lead. Cooper pulled behind the wall, ending his evening. Measmer won his second race of the season, followed by points leader Ackerly in second and Joey Rinehardt in third.
Defending race winner and points leader Adam Welch won his eighth race in the Wilburn Auto Body INEX Thunder Car Series. Jim Fluharty finished second with Rick Flemming in third.
The excitement of the Coca-Cola Pure Stocks Division went full-tilt as points leader Jeff Melton, Steve Irvin, Jamile Flaquer, and Patty Markin all collided in Turn Three before the completion of the first lap. All but Markin took the green flag when the race restarted after a brief red flag for debris. On the restart of Lap One, David Earnhardt, Jr. jumped out to an early lead, but Charles Hutto took the top position from the pole-sitter on lap five. Mechanical problems sent the #22 of Terry Blackford to the garage on lap forty-nine, bringing out the first caution of the race. This set the stage for an eleven lap shootout. Hutto jumped out to the lead but Jeff Melton was right on his bumper. Melton bounced off of Hutto on lap fifty-two as he passed him for the lead, but Hutto didn’t back off. The two battled for the lead as Brian Thomas caught the leaders and it turned into a three-way challenge up front. Melton, defending race winner, took home the first-place trophy, with Hutto finishing second and Thomas in third.
Ben Smith emerged victorious at the end of the Tim Marburger Honda Fast & Furious Fours Division 20 lap race. Nelson Barringer, who took home a Carolina Fast Marts Hard Charger Award during pre-race ceremonies, tangled with Mike Loomis on the first lap, but both drivers were able to continue with little damage. Barry Canter and Wayne Harrington collided on Lap Seven, slowing both cars. Smith took the lead on lap seven and never looked back. Tracy Mullis finished second and Brian Irby finished third.
Resident Nights return to Concord Speedway this summer. Cabarrus residents will be admitted for $5 on Independent-Tribune Newspaper Cabarrus County Night July 18th with proof of residence. The track will honor Stanly Count residents on the August 1st Tim Marburger Honda Stanly County Night presented by The Stanly News and Press. Other county nights are scheduled later in the season. A valid photo ID and/or utility bill confirming the home address is all that is needed to receive the reduced rates.
Concord Speedway is located at 7940 U. S. Highway 601 South of Concord (28025). For information call 704-782-4221 or visit the website at www.concordspeedway.net
