TRAVIS SHARPE A FIRST-TIME WINNER AT CONCORD
CONCORD, N.C. (April 17, 2005) - Travis Sharpe of Swansea, S.C. scored
his career-first Concord Motorsport Park victory Saturday night in the 100-lap
NASCAR Coca-Cola Cup late model stock feature.
Other winners were: Jeff Melton of Monroe in the 35-lap Tommy Johnson's
Motorsports Warehouse limited late model feature; D.J. Krentz of Concord in the
50-lap INEX/600 Racing thunder roadster feature; Clint Mills of Marshville in
the 25-lap Golden Gait Trailers mini stock feature; Brian Love of Mt.
Pleasant in the 20-lap New Star Environmental pure stock feature; and Bobby Measmer,
Jr. of Concord in the 15-lap Speedway Plumbing hornet feature.
Roger Lee Newton of Concord started on the pole and jumped into the early
lead. Sharpe, who started second chased until lap nine when he made his move
to the lead. Sharpe led the entire distance in a race slowed only twice by
yellow flags.
Buster Bennet of Monroe, a three-time winner this season, finished second
while rookie John Freeman of Huntersville was third. Travis McIntire of
Harrisburg finished fourth and Bobby Cooper of Burnsville was fifth.
Melton continues his impressive start to the 2005 season with the victory
in the limited late model feature. It was his second win and fourth top-two
finish in the four races this season. Jimmy Voyles of China Grove was second
with Concord's Terry Hoggard third. Randy McAnulty of David Kepley, both of
Concord, completed the top five.
Krentz started fifth in the debut of the thunder roadsters for the 2005
season and moved forward scoring his career-first victory at the track. Thomas
VanWingerden of Huntersville finished second with Drew Calhoun of Southern
Pines third. Kyle Beattie of Concord was fourth with Jim Fluharty, also of
Concord, fifth.
Mills started second and raced to his second win of the season in the
mini stock feature. David Pennell of Kannapolis was second with Kenny Brooks of
Concord third. Greg Butcher of Charlotte finished fourth and Adam Beaver of
Concord was fifth.
Love remained perfect on the season scoring his fourth pure stock victory
in four races the season. He started third and rolled to the win over fellow
Mt. Pleasant resident Chad Allmon. Steve Irvin of Concord was third, David
Miller of Stanfield finished fourth and Brian McKinney of Lake Norman completed
the top five.
Measmer started on the pole and scored his second victory of the season
in the hornets division. Ben Smith of Harrisburg finished second and last weeks
winner Wayne Harrington of China Grove was third. Brandon Cooper of
Burnsville finished fourth and Chad Johnson of Kannapolis completed the top five.
Friday night winners at the quarter-mile oval were: Danial Sossoman of
Midland in the Legends pro division; Clay Hair of Mt. Pleasant in the Legend's
masters division; Chrissy Wallace of Concord in the Legend's semi-pro division;
Bruce Benson II of Lexington in the Bandolero outlaws division; Cole Miktuk
of Rock Hill in the Bandolero young guns division; and Darrell Wallace Jr. of
Concord in the Bandolero bandits division.
Sunday winners at the quarter-mile oval were: Sossoman in the Legends pro
division; John Barilka of Charlotte in the Legends masters division; Rob Hall
of Charlotte in the Legend's semi-pro division; Benson II in the Bandolero
outlaws; Miktuk in the Bandelero young guns; Ronnie Bassett Jr. of Winton Salem
in the Bandolero bandits division.
This Saturday the weekly divisions have an off-week as the USAR Hooters
Pro Cup will compete in the Turn 4 Pizza 250. Weekly racing returns on April
30th with round two of the Future Cellular Big-10 Series super late models and a
complete NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series program. Legends and Bandoleros will race
on Friday at the quarter-mile oval.
